How to Make Bhaang Thandai | Step by Step Recipe

Bhaang Thandai is a traditional and refreshing Indian drink, especially popular during festivals like Holi. This creamy and aromatic beverage is made with a blend of rich spices, nuts, and infused with bhaang (a preparation of cannabis). If you want to create this festive drink at home, here is a simple and authentic recipe.

Ingredients:

For the Thandai Base:

  • 4 cups chilled full-fat milk

  • 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 10-12 almonds

  • 8-10 cashews

  • 8-10 pistachios

  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (khus-khus)

  • 1 tablespoon melon seeds

  • 8-10 black peppercorns

  • 4-5 green cardamom pods

  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds (saunf)

  • 2 tablespoons rose water or 5-6 dried rose petals

  • A pinch of saffron strands (optional)

For the Bhaang Paste:

  • 8-10 fresh cannabis leaves (for authentic bhaang preparation)

  • 1/2 cup warm water

Method:

Step 1: Prepare the Thandai Masala

  1. Soak the almonds, cashews, pistachios, poppy seeds, and melon seeds in water for 2-3 hours.

  2. Drain and grind the soaked ingredients with black peppercorns, cardamom pods, fennel seeds, and dried rose petals into a smooth paste using a little water.

Step 2: Make the Bhaang Paste

  1. Rinse the cannabis leaves thoroughly under clean water.

  2. Boil water and blanch the leaves for about 5 minutes.

  3. Drain the leaves and grind them with warm water until a fine paste forms.

Step 3: Combine and Assemble

  1. Warm the milk in a pan without bringing it to a boil.

  2. Stir in the sugar and let it dissolve completely.

  3. Add the prepared Thandai masala paste to the milk and mix well.

  4. Strain the mixture through a muslin cloth or fine sieve to remove any solid bits.

  5. Blend in the bhaang paste, ensuring it is evenly mixed.

  6. Add rose water and saffron (if using) for enhanced aroma and flavor.

Step 4: Chill and Serve

  1. Refrigerate the Bhaang Thandai for at least 2 hours to let the flavors infuse.

  2. Serve the drink chilled in tall glasses, garnished with chopped pistachios and rose petals for a festive touch.
